Nichole:
Thanks so much for giving me your book, which I very much enjoyed. I read the first half of the book last week, and it seemed to me almost an absurdist study -- by which I mean that the exaggerations were intended to make the reader question her or his assumptions. The initial meetings between the protagonist and the detective struck me in the same way -- there seemed to be something hollow or mechanical about their interactions, more scripted than real. That is not a flaw but a virtue when the intent is to drive a wedge between a reader's assumptions and what might really be the case: what is love, anyway; what is redemption?
When I read the second half of the book today, I thought I could see a possible answer, since you suggest that redemption is love. But the violent caricatures from the avenger seem to do a double duty, helping the protagonist work through pain but also representing the injustices of the legal system, so that the law is itself a kind of remorseless avenger. That was the target you were aiming for, if I'm getting it right: distorting our sense of what is normal so that we can see behind legal wrongs. Your concluding plea, or admonition is very powerful.

Thank you for writing this book; it's time we had a black female superhero. I experienced the same thing and the more I spoke to others about my situation some of those people thought I was crazy, and so I just stopped talking about it.

WOW!!!! The talents and the gift of writing Ms. Martin has is phenomenal. Pain to pen. Exposing and sharing deep personal issues is like leaving yourself Naked and NOT ashamed only to ultimately give a comforting blanket of understanding to the readers who secretly suffer from the same or similar circumstances. I've read them ALL... I've laughed out loud, had to take my hand to close my mouth from shock, cried a little & got MAD A LOT!! Great beach summer read!! Just watch the waves.

From a model student to being exposed to crack cocaine, to being a boy toy. Disaster was bound to find this fragile young woman. It was a good book, I look forward to reading more from the author.
